Science via Sarah

Once spring had sprung around here...we noticed the overwhelming amount of caterpillars that seemed to be around. Funny...I never remember seeing this many before - I guess it takes three year old eyes to help you see what the world really has to offer. Needless to say, Roanin was very happy with the crazy amount of little friends we had crawling all over the yard. And so an idea was born.

We took in one of the little fuzzy friends (Roanin named him Carlos). We set up shop for him in a jar, and provided him with all things necessary for a little caterpillar to make itself at home and make a cocoon (sticks, lettuce from the garden, and a little dish of water). Of course, this is based on no amount of research or knowledge. Just what I guessed it needed. I had to really hold back in using The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a reference guide on what to feed him. :)
After 2 days or so, Carlos made himself a cocoon underneath one of the lettuce leafs (I was right! Score one for Mommy!) and hung out for a couple of weeks. We just set the jar by the sink and watched him excitedly at first...but then kind of like you watch paint dry toward the end. You can imagine my surprise one morning while doing dishes, when I looked over and saw this little sucker just hanging onto the side and staring at me. Kinda freaky since we never bothered to put up any net or anything to keep whatever Carlos transformed into contained. So, for all those inquiring minds...it turns out that really furry caterpillars actually turn into moths, while the more slick caterpillars turn into butterflies. We got one of those as well - but didn't get pictures of final product. Here is Carlos...a beautiful orange and white moth with the weirdest markings on his face and long white hair on top of his head. He was really cool and Roanin was ELATED at the process.
And yes, in case you are wondering, this is about as scientific as I get. Pretty impressive, huh?
